A note about the family trees: Birthdates of living persons are not published. All persons are listed in order of generations, grouped by families (parents, siblings). Everyone appearing in the family trees are listed with a dual surname (surname of father followed by maiden surname of their mother, whenever both surnames are known). The discovery of a common ancestor for two or more separate family trees will result in the joining of those trees (a major goal of this project!). ERRORS MAY EXIST WITHIN THE FAMILY TREES.

VENTUROSA GARCIA-URQUIOLA - “MORENA”
Also known as "The Encyclopedia of the Urquiola Family", Morena was born in Gibara, Cuba, and was still living there when she passed away as one of the last surviving members still living in the place where the family had begun in Cuba.

GUMERSINDO URQUIOLA-ALLENDE
Born in the Province of Vizcaya in the Basque Country, he became the first Urquiola to settle on the eastern shores of Cuba.

ALEX URQUIOLA-MARRERO
Died in battle in 1958 fighting for Castro's Revolutionary war, while dreaming of a better life for the Cuban people.

ORIGINS OF THE SURNAME

On the European continent, situated on lands to the north of Spain, lies a mountainous region called the Basque Country. The people of this ancient land speak the language of Euskara. The name "Urquiola" originates from the Basque Country and developed from the language spoken by its people. "Urquiola" is how the name is written in the Spanish language. Basques, whom did not develop a written form of their language until the middle of the seventeenth century, write the name as "Urkiola". In the alphabet of the Euskara language, certain letters of the Spanish language are not present, among those not used is the letter Q. In the Spanish language the letter K is considered "foreign" in nature, and no true word of the original Spanish or Castilian vocabulary has the letter K.

As is the case with most Spanish and Basque surnames, "Urquiola" is locational in origin. "Urquiola" is the name that was given by Basques to a particular region of the Basque Country, long before the name was acquired as a person's surname. Traditionally, the surname "Urquiola", and most surnames in Spain, was prefixed with the Spanish word "de", meaning "of" or "from". The surname "De Urquiola" is how descendants of this surname were recorded for hundreds of years. Sometime during the twentieth century, descendants of this surname began eliminating the "De" prefix from their name, and began recording their surname simply as "Urquiola". To this day, however, in certain regions of the world, some descendants continue to identify themselves as "De Urquiola".

In a region known as the Province of Vizcaya, in the Basque Country, there is a mountain called Urquiola. It is a place inhabited by Basque people since prehistoric times. This area of the Basque Country was given the name "Urquiola" by early settlers. "Urquiola" is composed of two components of the Euskara language. It utilizes the words "“Urki" (meaning "“Birch Trees"), and "ola" (as it is here used translates to the word "place"). Analyzing its components, the name "Urquiola" was developed as a translation of the phrase "place of Birch trees". In the region of Urquiola, Birch trees are abundant and considered a very important aspect of its vegetation. As "Urquiola" is a name locational in origin, this circumstance indicates that the first humans to acquire the surname "Urquiola" were born in or resided in this location of the Basque Country. From there the descendants of this surname migrated to other regions, creating other branches of Urquiola families throughout the various territories of the Basque Country.

History has indicated that the people of Europe began acquiring surnames sometime after the year 1000 AD, and that the practice flourished beginning about the year 1200. The concept of using surnames had been developed much earlier by the Roman people. This practice, however, ended shortly after the Fall of the Roman Empire about 400 years after the death of Christ, until acquiring surnames once again achieved widespread use in Europe about the year 1200.

Sometime after the tenth century, Spanish missionaries began establishing places of worship throughout the Basque Country and systematically began converting most of the population to Christianity. Missionaries performed the ritual of Baptism following the birth of every child born to a Christian family. Missionaries performing a Baptismal were also responsible for recording the details of the birth for every newborn child; this was done in a book maintained at the Parish. When Missionaries began the practice of documenting births there had still not existed an alphabet or written form of the Euskara language. Missionaries traditionally wrote names, and much of what they wrote, the way it sounded to them. When a Basque identified himself or herself as "Uquiola", missionaries documented the name utilizing attributes of their native Spanish language.

The official Coat of Arms created for the surname "Urquiola" is composed of the image of a Birch Tree with a Wild Boar passing at the base of the tree. The Wild Boar is an animal very typical of the Urquiola region of the Basque Country.

HISTORIA DEL APELLIDO

Sobre el continente de Europa, ubicado en tierras al norte de España, existe una región montañosa nombrada País Vasco. La gente de esta tierra antigua habla el idioma de Euskara. El nombre "Urquiola" se origina de País Vasco y se desarrolló del idioma hablado por su población. "Urquiola" es la manera en que se deletrea en la idioma Castellano. Los Vascos, quienes no desarrollaron una forma escrita de su idioma hasta medianos del siglo diecisiete, escriben el nombre como "Urkiola". En el alfabeto del idioma Euskara ciertas letras no están presentes, entre estas, no existe la letra "Q". En el idioma castellano la letra "K" se considera "extranjera", y ninguna palabra verdadera del vocabulario entero Español o Castellano contiene la letra "K".

Así como es el caso con la mayoría de apellidos Españoles y Vascos, "Urquiola" se origina de alguna región local. "Urquiola" es el nombre dado por los Vascos a una región de País Vasco, mucho antes fue el nombre adquirido como apellido de una persona. Tradicionalmente, el apellido "Urquiola", y casi todos los apellidos en España, fueron prefijados por la palabra castellana "de". El apellido "De Urquiola" es la manera en que todos los descendientes de este apellido fueron inscritos por cientos de años. Angel Urquiola-Guerra
1937 – 2011 (Holguin, Cuba)

ANGEL SALOMON URQUIOLA-GUERRA (known as “Chami”) was born in Holguin, Cuba and was still residing there. After a battle with cancer, he passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2011. Until the end, Angel had remained very active and rode his bicycle throughout the city daily getting things done. Angel was the son of Angel Urquiola-Garrido and Edith Guerra... grandson of Angel Urquiola-Rondan and Amparo Garrido. News of Angel’s passing was provided by his daughter, Maria Elena Urquiola-Martinez , who lives in Miami.
